A famous concert pianist’s hands are terribly mangled in a train accident. A surgeon tries to help by replacing the hands with those of a freshly executed murderer. Soon, the hands seem to have a will of their own, and the pianist is accused of murdering his own father.
After their famous collaboration on “The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari”, Robert Weine again directs Conrad Veidt in this adaptation of the Maurice Renard novel. Re-made in 1935 as “Mad Love”, this version of the story focuses on the pianist’s slow descent into madness as he tries to adapt to his new appendages and the fact that he can no longer play the piano. He doesn’t even want to caress his wife anymore, since it would be a stranger’s hands doing the caressing!
For our new version of this film, we’ve replaced the intertitle cards with subtitles and re-edited a few scenes which seemed awkward, probably because the film was restored from multiple prints that were missing footage. We’re also presenting the film with a gorgeous surround-sound score from Doctor X. Highly recommended!
