THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (originally released 1963)

My 2023 build-up. I had to use every adhesive known to man to keep this guy together, including Plumber's 5-minute Putty to keep him standing upright on the base. (His shoe soles aren't parallel to the rock surfaces. Drove me nuts for decades, thinking I had done something wrong.....)

The face came out great when I did a wash and wipe of raw sienna over the ivory skin. In fact, the eyes came out so firey-looking that I didn't add anymore paint to the iris or pupil.

The cape has three different shades of red in it.

I glossed the mask to make it look like enameled porcelain. I also glossed the bottoms of the rocks to make them look a bit wet.

I loved working on the base! The back wall behind the prisoner is painted in browns and greens to stand out a bit.
The coloring for the letters is based on the box art.

My previous build-up from the early 2000s.

This painting is based on Jimmy Cagney's (!) very short performance as the Phantom in "The Man With A Thousand Faces" (1957), a so-so biopic of Lon Chaney Sr. It was probably all that Bama had to go on.

This was another Bama painting totally destroyed by Aurora in 1969.
